Werner Hahlweg Award 2010 - Call for Participation

Prof. Dr. Werner Hahlweg who passed away in 1989 ordered in his will that, every two years, a part of his heritage be dedicated to the promotion of military history and military science by funding an award for excellent research work in these disciplines covering the preceding period.

The award is endowed with a total prize money of 11.500 Euros. Prizes will be awarded for the best research papers in German language, e.g. diploma theses, magister theses, doctoral dissertations, professorial dissertations, which will be completed in 2008/09 and submitted by 31 March 2009 (date of the postal stamp) to:

The papers have to be submitted in triplicate. One copy will be sent to the Werner Hahlweg Archive and can be made available for studies; the remaining copies will be returned to the sender after the 2010 laureates have been determined. The copy right will remain with the author.

Personal data (including phone number, fax number and E-mail address, if applicable) as well as academic background have to be sent with the paper. Only unpublished papers will be accepted. Grants for print costs can be awarded for papers which don’t win a prize, but who are worthy of support, provided that they are available for publication in the book series “Militärgeschichte und Wehrwissenschaften” or “Wehrtechnik und Wissenschaftliche Waffenkunde”. The award-winning papers should be available for publication in the mentioned book series, if possible. Authors are explicitly encouraged to also submit papers on historic or modern defense technology as well as scientific-historic weaponry, provided they are of general interest.

The awards will be handed over by the President of the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement. Legal recourse is excluded.

Prof. Dr. Werner Hahlweg (1912-1989) held the chair of the Faculty for Military History and Military Science at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster/Westfalen, the only one of this kind in Germany at that time. Werner Hahlweg was an internationally highly reputed teacher and scientist. He was especially respected for his role as doyen of Clausewitz research.
