Guided missile IDAS honored with Technology Award

Berlin, 11/29/2007.
The engagement of surface targets from a submerged submarine is still a dream of the future. The guided missile IDAS, however, could close this capability gap in the foreseeable future.

The guided missile system IDAS (Interactive Defense and Attack System for Submarines) was honored with the Technology Award of the armament industry on 29 November 2007 in the category Special Award. The new missile system distinguishes by its ability to be employed by submerged submarines.

The IDAS missile is discharged under water from a torpedo tube, is launched, breaks the water surface and is afterwards able to engage surface targets, as for example hovering helicopters, but also sea and land targets. During the whole operation there is a permanent data link to the submarine via an optical waveguide. This enables the transmission of the seeker head camera’s pictures to the combat information center and a posteriori change of the missile’s target.

IDAS is a research and technology study of the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement. The study was realized by ARGE IDAS, consisting of the companies Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, Diehl BGT Defence and the Norwegian Company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

The Technology Award of the Committee of Defense Industry of the Federation of German Industries acknowledges innovative technological concepts, which serve Germany’s security provision.
