The second satellite of the SAR-Lupe system was successfully launched on 2 July 2007. The reconnaissance satellite took off as scheduled aboard a COSMOS-3M rocket from the Russian international cosmodrome Plesetsk situated in the south of Archangelsk at 21:38:41 CEST.

It is the second of 5 identical radar satellites, providing the Bundeswehr for the first time with a space-based worldwide weather- independent satellite reconnaissance capability. The system is based on the “Synthetic Aperture Radar“ principle and is in the position to produce high-resolution imagery of virtually each point of the earth.

The system is manufactured by the Bremen-based company OHB-System AG on behalf of the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement. The remaining satellites shall also be launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome at three to six months intervals, respectively.
