Corvette Christened OLDENBURG

Hamburg, 06/28/2007.
With the corvettes, the German Navy receives a new type of ship which is particularly optimized for littoral and coastal operations. However, worldwide operations within multinational formations also belong to the mission spectrum of the units. The christening of the OLDENBURG in Hamburg was the fourth christening of a K 130.

The fourth BRAUNSCHWEIG class corvette (K 130) was christened OLDENBURG at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg on 28 June 2007. The official ceremony was chaired by Mrs. Dr. Annette Schawander, wife of Oldenburg’s Lord Mayor. Among the guests who attended the ceremony were Parliamentary State Secretary Kossendey as well as other high-ranking representatives of the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement and its agencies, the Navy, the city of Oldenburg and industry.

The OLDENBURG is the fourth of five BRAUNSCHWEIG class corvettes to be procured for the Navy. The Fr. Lürssen Werft Bremen, the Nordseewerke Emden, and Blohm + Voss (Hamburg) cooperate in the construction of the corvette. The three shipbuilding companies involved manufacture modules that are assembled by the respective delivering shipyard. This means, for example, that the forebodies are manufactured in Emden, while the afterbodies are built in Bremen. Blohm + Voss is responsible for the superstructures and mast modules. The OLDENBURG, the keel of which was laid in January 2006, is one of two vessels delivered by Blohm + Voss.

Prior to being delivered to the Navy, presumably in August 2008, the OLDENBURG shall start its comprehensive acceptance trials at the beginning of 2008. The fifth and last corvette will be christened on 26 September 2007 at the Fr. Lürssen Werft in Bremen.
