On 26 April 2007, these two offices in Koblenz opened their doors and presented the different tasks areas of a potential future employer. A total number of 50 female students, attending grades 5 to 10, had the opportunity to get an insight into a variety of the technical tasks of the civilian Federal Defense Administration.

"It's great to have the opportunity to try things out yourself at the different stations and to be able to take the result home with you. Much more exciting than school." That was just one of the participants' positive reactions. The organizers also consider Girls' Day 2007 at BWB and WTD 51 a success. The day could be used to give young women an insight into technical professions. Already today, the BWB, the largest technical authority in Germany, urgently requires female and male engineers.

Different "workstations" offered the opportunity to gain practical experience in the area of technology. The activities ranged from modern data processing applications and practical crafts work-experience to measuring trips on an engineer boat.

Under direction, cubes were made at the WTD 51 wood and metal workshops and the participants could try their hands at changing a tire at the vehicle maintenance shop. Whoever preferred having a look at traditional measuring activities in a laboratory could choose between temperature measurement, material testing, climatic investigations or measuring speed during a boat trip on the river Moselle. The girls had to show their skills in handling a soldering iron and tin when preparing an electrical circuit.

Those interested in working with a computer could actively participate in making a CAD drawing or in the printing shop and layout work. The girls could let their creativity run wild when they tried out working as web designers at the BWB IT Center.
