On February 14, 2007 the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB) in Koblenz tasked Eurocopter Deutschland in Donauwörth with the product improvement of the CH-53G/GS medium transport helicopter.

The product improvements performed on 40 of the total of 80 CH-53G army helicopters allow the weapon system capabilities to be adjusted to the numerous and increasingly complex tasks of the Bundeswehr.

Basically, the contract includes improvements of the avionics suite, but it also comprises an increase in self-defense capabilities. The period of performance scheduled for the product improvements covers a period until the end of 2013 – including all options.

The CH-53G/GS used in the army contribute greatly to the operational deployment capability and tactical mobility of the armed forces in the mission area. In the future, the medium transport helicopter will be used in its product-improved version CH-53GA together with the UH TIGER and the NH90 helicopters until the follow-up model is available and takes over.
