The Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB)

The BWB and its agencies are subordinate to the Directorate General of Armaments at the Federal Ministry of Defense. They thus represent, together with the Federal Office of the Bundeswehr for Information Management and Information Technology (IT-AmtBw), the armament sector below the ministerial level.

The BWB is the largest technical authority in Germany and has its main location in Koblenz. It is responsible for ensuring that the Bundeswehr is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, with the exception of IT projects which are the responsibility of the Federal Office of the Bundeswehr for Information Management and Information Technology.

The BWB is supported in its tasks by seven Technical Centers and three Research Institutes. These agencies provide technical support for the project management at BWB level and conduct defense technical and scientific investigations, tests, studies and market analyses. The Naval Arsenal, another subordinate agency of the BWB, with its two installations ensures maintenance and repair work for naval ships and boats.

A liaison office in Reston/USA represents the defense technology and armaments interests vis-à-vis government organizations and industry in the U.S. and Canada.

Thus, the BWB contributes decisively to ensuring that the Bundeswehr can fulfill Germany's security commitments as a NATO and EU partner.
