Portrait of WTD 81
The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Information Technology and Electronics (WTD 81) belongs to the BWB organization. It is located in Greding (Bavaria) and was founded in the early 1960s.
WTD 81 meets the demands of a future-oriented high-tech center with state-of-the-art workstations.
One of the facilities which the Bundeswehr Technical Center for Information Technology and Electronics uses to accomplish its tasks is Europe's largest fully shielded hangar for the study of electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) and electro-magnetic effects. As an EMC test center, WTD 81 is the central Bundeswehr point of contact in all matters of electro-magnetic compatibility and electro-magnetic effects.
The world's largest dome houses a unique target simulation facility. It is used for the realistic simulation of battlefield scenarios in the visual and infrared range.
The responsibilities of WTD 81 include
- Performance of experiments and analyses as well as integrated compliance demonstrations as defined by the CPM procedural regulations;
- Management and coordination of research & technology (R&T) projects defined by the Federal Ministry of Defense R&T program;
- Technical support of armament projects.

WTD 81 currently has a staff of about 285. Furthermore, WTD 81 offers one apprenticeship a year in the field of motor vehicle mechatronics.
