The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Protective and Special Technologies (WTD 52) belongs to the BWB organization. It is located in Oberjettenberg, Schneizlreuth (Bavaria) and was founded in 1957.

WTD 52 serves as a point of contact for any questions relating to direct and indirect protection and is also in charge of a range of matters relating to special technologies.

Its core competences cover protection aspects of army, air force and navy applications. Future-oriented tasks are handled with the help of state-of-the-art technology and numerical simulation. Thanks to the special test facilities available at WTD 52, such as the special underground test stands and the mountain test range on the Reiteralpe plateau at approximately 1700 metres above sea level, special emphasis can be placed on special technologies.

The Bundeswehr Technical Center for Protective and Special Technologies in Oberjettenberg has the following responsibilities:

  • Development of physical protection measures, with the main objective of ensuring the safety of service members during operations abroad;
  • Short-notice support – concerning protection of mobile and stationary facilities – of Bundeswehr task forces participating in peacekeeping missions;
  • Infrastructure protection against terrorist attacks;
  • Development and study of non-lethal weapons;
  • Indirect protection projects in the field of Camouflage, Concealment and Deception (CC&D);
  • Numerical simulation of weapon effects and protective measures;
  • Simulation of blast waves to harden defense materiel;
  • Testing of mobile antenna support structures;
  • Testing of high-risk batteries;
  • Other studies relating to special technologies.

WTD 52 currently has a staff of about 150.
